Galerie Andreas Binder presents the solo exhibition by Tim Maguire and his new series of works 'Separation paintings'.
Tim Maguire's point of departure for his paintings is reproductions and photos that serve as models for his artistic compositions. His creed "I invent nothing except the way I paint" makes it clear that in his works Tim Maguire does not take art history or depictions of reality as his theme but tries to find and use new compositional possibilities in his painting. The result is paintings that have an unusually 'different' effect on the observer. "What drives me," says Tim Maguire, "is the joy of seeing what happens if I distribute primary colours on the medium in accordance with my method and my pictures develop into the desired result without adherence to the usual rules of compositional pictorial structure."
Maguire's view always has a microscopic element - he brings the objects of his pictures so close up. The motifs for his flower and fruit pieces actually come from enlarged details from 17th- and 18th-century still life paintings, yet Maguire's paintings frequently create the impression that they are not hand-made but have arisen as a result of a photomechanical process. The impression comes from the extremely flat and smooth surface - which in turn is a result of Maguire's unique way of painting. It is not so much photography that he imitates - and definitely not nature - but rather contemporary printing and reproduction processes.
