Over the last decade, Tim Maguire has pursued his fascination with colour and process through the various media of painting, printmaking and photography. In each case he passes his subject matter, from the familiar large scaled details of sunlit flowers to shimmering snowflakes against night skies, through a kind of prism – breaking down his source photographs into three primary colours, which he then uses to reconstruct the image in transparent layers.
In his latest exhibition Other Light, at Galerie Andreas Binder, Munich, the artist  is showing works in four distinct media – paintings, prints on paper, video, and Duratrans mounted onlight boxes. Of these latter works, which incorporate all aspects of his practice, (photography, print-making and painting), he writes

“I’ve been playing with the idea of light boxes for a while. When I began to work from my own photographs some years ago, it was when digital cameras were just becoming affordable, and I was fascinated by the often strange and unearthly light in those photos when viewed on a glowing computer screen. For some years now I’ve been making paintings with very thin transparent pure colour, trying to emulate on canvas that slightly unearthly digital glow, and inevitably that has led me to try to reproduce that effect by illuminating the work itself. An earlier series Light and Water used light boxes, with purely photographic, albeit quite abstract imagery. These works marry the medium of this new work with the more figurative subject matter and painterly process of earlier work. They are both images that talk about light (light shining through transparent berries and translucent petals). andalso literally use light as their medium to convey these images.
